Description
The Intervention Program for Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder Aged 4–8 Years (IPCDCD-40) is a structured psychomotor intervention program specifically designed to improve the motor competence, functional abilities, and overall psychomotor development of children diagnosed with or presenting symptoms of Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). The program is based on the principles of psychomotor education, developmental learning, and evidence-based pediatric intervention, providing systematic activities that promote motor skill acquisition through play-based learning.
The intervention incorporates a progressive series of psychomotor exercises and games that are developmentally appropriate for children between 4 and 8 years of age. Activities are designed to strengthen fundamental movement skills while simultaneously enhancing body awareness, motor planning, coordination, balance, spatial orientation, and self-confidence.
The program focuses on five core domains of psychomotor development:
- Body awareness and body schema;
- Gross motor skills;
- Fine motor skills;
- Ball handling and object control;
- Rhythm and motor coordination.
Difficulty levels increase gradually throughout the intervention, allowing activities to be continuously adapted according to each child’s developmental profile, functional needs, and individual progress. The program can be implemented individually or in small groups within preschool settings, primary schools, rehabilitation centers, special education services, and pediatric therapeutic environments.
Analysis and Use of Data
The IPCDCD-40 consists of 40 structured intervention sessions delivered over approximately five months, with a frequency of two sessions per week. Each session lasts approximately 20–30 minutes and follows a standardized intervention protocol while allowing individualized adaptations based on each child’s motor abilities.
Program effectiveness is evaluated through pre- and post-intervention assessments using the Developmental Coordination Disorder Screening Test, enabling objective measurement of changes in psychomotor performance following participation in the intervention.
Research applications of the IPCDCD-40 allow the examination of relationships between intervention outcomes and numerous developmental variables, including:

Purpose
The primary purpose of the IPCDCD-40 is to enhance the psychomotor abilities of children aged 4–8 years who exhibit symptoms of Developmental Coordination Disorder, thereby improving their motor competence, functional independence, and participation in everyday activities.
In addition, the program aims to strengthen body awareness, movement quality, coordination, self-confidence, school readiness, and social participation while providing educators, therapists, psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and special education professionals with an evidence-based framework for individualized psychomotor intervention.
The IPCDCD-40 also serves as a valuable research protocol for evaluating intervention effectiveness and supporting the development of best practices in pediatric rehabilitation and developmental intervention.
Sample
The development and evaluation of the intervention program were conducted in two consecutive phases.
During the first phase, approximately 1,200 children were assessed using the Developmental Coordination Disorder Screening Test in order to identify children presenting symptoms of developmental coordination difficulties.
During the second phase, 24 children aged 4–8 years from preschools located in Epirus and Athens who demonstrated the greatest motor difficulties participated in the intervention program. Following completion of the program, all participants were reassessed using the same screening instrument to evaluate improvements in psychomotor performance.
Validity and Reliability
The reliability of the intervention outcomes was supported through the repeated administration of the Developmental Coordination Disorder Screening Test at different assessment points before and after the intervention.
The internal consistency of the intervention program was ensured through the logical sequencing of activities, the progressive increase in task difficulty, and the continuous adaptation of exercises to each child’s developmental needs and motor abilities. This structured approach maximized intervention fidelity while allowing individualized therapeutic progression.
The study findings demonstrated significant improvements in children’s psychomotor performance following participation in the program, supporting the effectiveness, validity, and reliability of the IPCDCD-40 as an intervention protocol for children with Developmental Coordination Disorder.
