Yale–Brown Obsessive Compulsive Symptom Checklist [Y-BOCS-SC]
Description
The Yale–Brown Obsessive Compulsive Symptom Checklist (Y-BOCS-SC) is a clinician-rated checklist used as part of a structured interview to identify obsessions and compulsions and determine treatment target symptoms. It includes 55 questions.
Symptom Categories
The checklist covers several types of obsessions, including contamination, aggressive, sexual, religious, hoarding, pathological doubt, and symmetry-related obsessions. It also assesses compulsions such as washing, checking, repeating, hoarding, ordering, counting, and mental rituals.
Purpose and Use
For each symptom, the clinician records whether it is currently present, occurred in the past, or is absent. The patient’s report guides the assessment, while the final rating is based on the interviewer’s clinical judgment.
Scoring
A score from 0 to 110 may be calculated, assigning 1 point to past symptoms and 2 points to current symptoms. However, the checklist emphasizes that the total score is not the main method of interpretation; the specific symptom profile provides the most clinically meaningful information.
